Brain fog can be caused by many elements

Since brain fog is not a medical condition, but rather a word that refers to different conditions that has an impact on a person’s ability to focus and have a clear mind, we should start by taking a look at what causes the condition. Be Brain Fit reports that the number reason for brain fog is diet – eating the wrong types of food can have a negative effect on the brain (just as how eating the right foods can have a positive effect). They also explain that sugar, low-fat diets, food allergies and food additives can all lead to a foggy feeling in the brain.

Natural Remedies For Brain Fog

We now know what can cause brain fog and, by looking at these common causes, we can surely make a conclusion as to several lifestyle changes that may have a positive impact on the condition. Apart from lifestyle changes, I would also like to introduce you to a couple of natural remedies for brain fog – these will help you get faster benefits and clear up the foggy feeling in your mind, thus leading to an increase in concentration and a better ability to focus on your current situation.

#1: Coffee

Yes, this is quite obvious – but there’s actually people going around saying that coffee may lead to an increase in brain fog. It’s important to realize that the only time coffee would have a negative impact on your mental performance abilities is if you drink too much of it, or drink a lot of it and then suddenly stop drinking coffee at all (caffeine withdrawal).

When taken in moderate doses, coffee can actually help spike your mental capabilities. Livestrong reports that a study conducted in 2005 found coffee to be beneficial towards several brain-related activities. The study provided evidence that coffee enhances the activities of two areas of the brain:

  • Anterior cingulate activities was increased
  • Anterior cingulate gyrus activities was increased

Both of these are present within the brain’s lobe and are associated with abilities such as concentration and attention.

Medical News Daily also reports that coffee can actually stimulate memory and mental performance. They also explain that the effects of coffee takes as much as six hours to wear off, so it’s important not to drink too much coffee.

#2: Ginkgo Biloba

Ginkgo Biloba can help relief mental fatigue

Okay, that’s one heck of a complicated name. I know. But, bare with me. This is a leaf extract that has been used by the Chinese for centuries. The extract of this leaf enhances the blood flow to your brain and it acts as an antioxidant, as reported by WebMD. Many studies have been performed on the use of Ginkgo Biloba to enhance mental performance – some of the studies did not find any positive results, but many have linked the plant extract to a boost in various mental functions. WebMD reports that several studies have shown a memory-improvement in patients diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

The tree from which this extract is taken is also called a “living fossil”. These trees are some of the oldest known species of trees and is said to have survive many extinction events.

Medical News Today reports that the extract is commonly used to increase memory, as well as to enhance overall brain function – including focus and enhancing social behavior. Apart from the benefits Ginkgo Biloba has on the brain’s performance, they also report that the extract has potential benefits for individuals suffering from anxiety disorders.

#3: Vitamin D

Vitamin D supplements can help clear brain fog

If you’re skeptical about using a plant that you don’t even know how to pronounce, maybe a dose of good old vitamin D may be of assistance. This vitamin is an essential part of the body, but is not always readily available in our food. The National Institutes of Health reports that vitamin D promotes healthy calcium absoprtion and has an effect on bone mineralization. The vitamin is also reported as an essential part of bone growth and remodeling. Furthermore, they report that a vitamin D deficiency can cause bones to become brittle and thin.

Okay, so our brains aren’t made out of bones… so, let’s see what they say about vitamin D and brain function. A study by the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University reports that as much as 77.2% of people may be deficient of vitamin D. They provide evidence that overall levels of fatigue can be significantly lowered by normalizing levels of vitamin D in the body. Mental fatigue, overall fatigue – these all have an effect on your brain’s ability to focus.

#4: Citicoline

Another one that’s quite difficult to pronounce, yet provides us with positive health benefits. Citicoline is a naturally occurring chemical found in the brain. When taken as a dietary supplement, it can increase the amount of citicoline naturally occurring in the brain, thus helping to improve overall brain functionality. WebMD reports that this chemical is often used in patients with dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss and even ADHD (attention deficit-hyperactive disorder). Other than that, is is reported that citicoline can actually improve the blood flow to the brain, which can give the user a boost in brain performance and clear up a foggy feeling.

#5: Magnesium

As the last entry in my list of natural remedies for brain fog, I’d like to point out a deficiency, rather than a remedy. Many people focus too much on finding a “cure” before looking at what is causing their problems. The same goes for people experiencing brain fog – have you ever considered the fact that your brain fog could be caused by not gaining an adequate amount of nutrition?

Be Brain Fit reports brain fog to be the number one symptom of magnesium deficiency. They also report that being deficient of magnesium can lead to a lack of concentration, sleep deprivation, anxiety and a variety of other conditions. It’s also reported that magnesium plays a vital role in serotonin production, which means being deficient of magnesium could also lead to depression.

Final Words

Brain fog can impact our abilities to focus and concentrate. This can effect our daily lives – at home, at work, at school and even while socializing. While anti-depressents and prescription drugs are available to enhance mental performance and relief mental impairment, these often comes with side-effects. My natural remedies for brain fog shared with you today are not based on chemical compounds, can help you clear out mind fog and does not cause side-effects.
